This satirical sequel is a far better one than you’d expect. In fact, this time its almost dropped the satire and begun to establish a wicked response to backlash from certain movie-goers concerning the film’s violence impacting the real world. Scream 2 is a sequel that knows exactly how to make a good one, of course by wearing its status like a chain on the neck. It’s proud to be a sequel because where else could this franchise lead onto?
Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson return for a wittingly honorable ‘part two’ in the Scream franchise, maintaining a very formulaic two hours of fun and biting behavior. Craven has fun with the Ghostface killer, giving it more screen time and perhaps hidden but intentional humor to his actions. Hell, at one point he even hijacks an automobile and has a reasonably great time driving furiously.
If you can believe it, Courtney Cox is the star of the show; her downtime with David Arquette is sweet and evolving, compared to Neve Campbell who I never really found compelling at all. As a whole, Scream 2 is a surprisingly ‘good’ sequel with nothing refreshing to say except satire and upholding its controversy. Like the film’s killer, its a copy-cat movie and in no way is it better than the original, but its all rather laced miraculously by horror maestro Wes Craven that its too good to ignore.
